Solo trips are always a fun time, and even though I wanted Mr. Blakes to come with me on this one, I enjoyed by trip to the Black Women’s Expo in Chicago to represent EDEN BodyWorks. The Black Women’s Expo is the nation’s foremost exposition targeting the African American consumer market and this year it took place at McCormick Place in Chicago, IL. It is a weekend that empowers, enlightens and uplifts African American women and their families with informative seminars and panel discussions presented by notable local and national speakers and lecturers, educational exhibits and corporate displays, and for local and national entertainers.

For this trip, I flew American Airlines for the first time. The fight from Norfolk was pretty uneventful until we landed in Chicago, where it was snowing. Because…Chicago. Fortunately by the time I got to the Hilton O’Hare to pick up my complimentary wheels, thanks to DriveShop, the snow turned to rain. When I asked the valet to show me to my car, I was delighted to see the absolute cutest car – the 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage, a 5 door hatchback in Plasma Purple. It was like a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day, and the perfect size for just one person to skate around the city for a weekend.


With an EPA fuel mileage rating of up to 37 mpg city/44 mpg highway, the 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage is the most fuel efficient non-hybrid gasoline vehicle available in America today with a combined fuel economy of 40 mpg. Basically that means, you’ll spend about a $1000 a year on gas with this car. Keep your coins in your pocket and not at the gas station.

Even though it was fuel efficient, it drove very well and had plenty get-up-and-go, especially as I drove from the airport to the hotel which was about a 45 minute drive. I stayed at the Millennium Knickerbocker hotel, which sits on the same block as Louis Vutton right between Lake Shore Dr. and Michigan Ave. The staff was extremely courteous and helpful, and the room was clean and comfortable. But the cons were that there were none of the amenities you normally expect at a hotel, like room service, a fitness center, or complimentary wifi. Talk about disappointed – I packed my workout gear and everything. Fortunately the hotel is located in walking distance from all the essentials – lots of restaurants and stores, a Starbucks, and a Walgreens.

I worked at the EDEN BodyWorks booth during all three days of the Black Womens Expo along with fellow brand ambassador Dr. Renee Matthews. Dr. Renee and I have been friends virtually for quite a while, so it was nice to finally meet in person and spend some time together just getting to know each other. Friday was a pretty quiet day, which is to be expected. When I got back to the hotel, that’s when I discovered that there was no room service, so Dr. Renee recommended Lou Malnati’s, and I had a personal deep dish The Lou pizza and a salad delivered. I ate it so fast, I only got to capture it on SnapChat, so it’s long gone.  You should follow me on SnapChat so you don’t miss that kinda stuff – just saying. @NaturallyGlamTV – join the SnapFam.

Saturday at the expo was a different story – it was a packed house! Kelly Price and Toni Terry performed, and celebrities like Porsha Williams, Kim Whitley and Leon were speakers. I also got to see my love Michelle @naturalista86 and finally meet Rachel @RachelOBeauty. What I always enjoy about working at expos is meeting so many people and helping them discover EDEN BodyWorks products, hear their stories and help them with their hair care struggles.

That evening, all of my plans to meet up with my homies who are in Chicago fell through, so Dr. Renee recommended another spot for me to try that was near my hotel called Bandera. She told me to be sure to have their signature skillet cornbread, and I had to oblige since she was on point about Lou Malnati’s. I made a reservation for 10:15pm, and decided to take an Uber to the restaurant.

Bandera surprisingly was packed like it was 7pm so I knew it was going to be so good. Their menu features American cuisine with a southwestern flair. Just as Dr. Renee instructed, I ordered Bandera’s signature jalapeño iron skillet cornbread, and for my entree I had the Dutch Country Chicken which features their rotisserie chicken with wild rice vinaigrette. I took the waitress’ advise on a sweet yet strong alcoholic drink, and ordered the signature margarita which was a score as well. The food was so delicious, I ate the other half on the way to the airport on Sunday, and made sure that cornbread survived the plane ride back to Virginia to Mr. Blakes could try some.

Sunday’s show didn’t start until 11am, so I asked Dr. Renee to be my escort and take me around town. Even though the Mitsubishi Mirage is perfect for a solo trip, there was plenty of room for two or even four. We saw some of the typical tourist stops, like the Big Bean – I don’t know the official name. We also took a right through Broadway Chicago, the old Harpo Studios, and the Chicago History Museum.

Next time I come to Chicago, I already know a few things. First, I want it to be warm. Second, I want to have plenty of time to sight-see. And third, I would definitely love to ride around in the Mitsubishi Mirage again. Have you traveled to Chicago or are you from Chicago? Tell us what we really missed during our visit. Kinky Hair Unlocked – a brand-new hair care experience designed specifically for naturals with tightly coiled curls – took place in Atlanta on April 24, 2015. The Friday before one of the largest natural hair shows in the world, Kinky Hair Unlocked was a one-of-a-kind hair care symposium geared toward educating women on how to achieve maximum length and healthy hair from their scalp to their ends.

I was compensated to participate in the portrait studio event and share my experience at the photo shoot. My opinions about the products are my own and were not solicited by Ouidad. We keep it real at Naturally Glam.
There’s so much more to New York Fashion Week (NYFW) than just the fashions. Hair and makeup play a key role in how the designers want their collection to be presented. More and more, we are seeing more textured hair on the runways, and Ouidad is a brand that stands behind embracing various textures and curls. Ouidad has branded themselves The Curl Experts, and they have the products, tools, and education to back it up. I was elated that they invited me to come to NY to be a part of their #ExpressNeverSuppress Portrait Studio event for NYFW. Famed Fashion & Street Style photographer Simbarashe Cha of Lord Ashbury would be turning his camera on me and my curls, and so I made my way to NY for the day.

I arrived at Sixty Suites and was greeted by smiling faces, cocktails and treats, while being introduced to the event host Natalie Zfat, RED PR staff and Ouidad team. I sat down with Ouidad master stylist Chad Penally who took some time to ask me what questions I had about the product line and my hair specifically. He really wanted to know more about my hair woes and concerns, and what hair care needs and styling options I was looking for. My hair was extremely dry from being product-less all morning, so once we talked, he worked on my hair using the Ouidad product line.

Section by section, Chad first sprayed my hair with the Botanical Boost Curl Energizing & Refreshing Spray to add some much needed nourishment to my hair. Then to add some definition and soft hold, he worked (and I mean WORKED) in the Curl Quencher Hydrafusion Intense Curl Cream. Of course, I had to jump onto Periscope to share with you all live, so here’s some footage so you can see what was used and Chad’s technique.

After my hair was all set, I sat in Erica Gonzalez’s chair to get my makeup done. Erica is a NY-based makeup artist who’s been doing makeup for 7 years. If you’re looking for a makeup artist, check her out on Instagram @ericamua.

Then finally, I got to meet Simbarashe Cha of Lord Ashbury and get ready to shoot some pictures. No pressure. I’m cute. My hair is cute. Let’s go!

Motivational speaker and activist, Eunique Jones Gibson (pictured below) has used social media to launch the “Because of Them, We Can” and “I AM Trayvon Martin” campaigns. Eunique has helped to empower young black people by honoring their ancestors’ legacies ad has inspired people to use their own voices to highlight the need for change.

Launched with just a handful of friends by François Pasquier over 27 years ago, Paris’ Dîner en Blanc now assembles nearly 15,000 people each year. The event has since gone international, and cities all over the world host their own respective events through the year. I was excited to find out that Hampton Roads would host the very first Diner En Blanc event in Virginia, and just had to go.

The concept is one of exclusivity and elegance. At the last minute, the location is given to attendees who have been patiently waiting to learn the “Dîner en Blanc’s” secret place. Hundreds, or even thousands of people, dressed all in white, and conducting themselves with the greatest decorum, elegance, and etiquette, all meet for a mass “chic picnic” in a public space. Our space ended up being a large park space near the Mariner’s Museum in Newport News, VA.

Guests from all over the Hampton Roads area and beyond were brought together from diverse backgrounds by a love of beauty, good taste, and having an amazing night. We literally stopped traffic on Warwick Blvd, one of the busiest streets in Newport News, as the sea of people dressed in white made their way to the event space. Admittedly, there was some confusion once we arrived as to where to begin to setup our tables. But once we found our spot, and got situated, we setup our tables and settled in. Check out my table setting and some tips on how to set an amazing table for two.

Hubby decided on a casual look since we would be outdoors, and he would be carrying all of our items. A button collar white T-shirt and linen shorts from Old Navy came to a grand total of $10. Paired with a crisp pair of low-top white leather Converse, he looked very handsome I think. Evidently a few other ladies thought so too – because they were flirting with him all night.

My look was a floral overlay skirt from Forever 21 and a white slimmer top from Target. Shoes, well, I never actually put on the shoes I brought so let’s just skip that.  I wore an ear cuff set also from Old Navy. Simple chic was the name of the game.

A wave of out white napkins signaled it was time to enjoy the amazing menu we had prepared. Our table buddies Dorian and Liv brought an amazing spread of cheese, crackers, bread, honey, fruit and fruit spreads to start with. For dinner, we brought roasted salmon, tri-color potatoes, and green beans to pair with Dorian’s italian lemon herb shrimp. For dessert, we brought cupcakes from a local bakery to pair with Liv’s watermelon mojito salad.

Once dinner ended, I had to say hi to my blogger boo Deanna who was there with her sisters and friends as well. Doesn’t her jumpsuit look amazing?

Speaking of cuteness, Dorian’s tulle skirt was a huge hit amongst attendees and Liv’s romper was soft and chic.

Since fireworks aren’t allowed in the wonderful state of Virginia, glow sticks were used instead of sparklers to let attendees know it was time to put the forks down and hit the dance. The glow of candles, all LED by the way, just added to the ambience. We even popped bottles…of almond flavored sparkling moscato that I picked up from Trader Joes for $5.99. It was delicious!

The DJ played the hits that kept the dance floor bumping. Even Mr. Blakes did the Cupid Shuffle. There was no Whip, and no Nae Nae, and I didn’t miss it at all. On our way out, we got to meet Racquel Kristin (c) of RKristi Modern Hospitality, our local event host. All and all, we had a great time and all agreed that we’ll attend from now on.

Today is Be Blogalicious-eve, and I’m super excited to attend my second large blogging conference. Last year I attended Blogging While Brown, and learned so much. When the opportunity presented itself to be a volunteer at Blogalicious, which is so close to home in MD, I jumped at the chance. I’d heard so many amazing stories about the conference that I couldn’t imagine it being just 4 hours away and not going. Bloggers who are interested in attending blogging conferences often ask if it’s worth the time and investment. I believe so; but in order to make it work, here’s the BEST advice for attending a large blogging conference and making it truly beneficial.

HAVE A PLAN!

Really. No seriously. No for real. Have a plan and stick to the plan. When you see others who get things popping after a major conference, don’t think that just happened by accident. While you want to enjoy your time at the conference, please remember that you spent some coins so you need to see some return on your investment. Here are 5 questions to ask yourself while creating your blogging conference plan.

1. What do you need to take your blog to the next level? Whether the ‘next level’ is actually starting your blog, or it’s creating a strategy to become a blogging coach, think serious about what the next steps are for YOUR blog. It’s important to think specifically about what you need, and select panels and workshops that will meet your needs. Often times, there are multiple workshops and panels happening simultaneously, so you have to choose strategically what you’ll sit in on. Plan out where you need to go ahead of time. Don’t get distracted by the workshop on creating mini-courses on blogging for profit, when you are still asking what’s the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. Also, don’t just follow the crowd or go where your other blogger boos go. This is your money so get what you came for. You can always find a friend to get notes from, or look up the speakers for more information about their topic later.

2. What brands would you like to forge relationships with, and how will you do it? Most large blogging conferences are sponsored by major brands. Blogalicious is sponsored by brands like Toyota, Wells Fargo, Hallmark, and Coca-Cola. Who doesn’t want the opportunity to work with the likes of brands like these? Here’s the kicker though. Just handing a brand your business card isn’t enough. Why not? Because this is a large conference with hundreds of attendees, all handing these brand representatives their business cards saying ‘I’d love to work with you!’ Stand out from the pack by doing a little research, and presenting a brief proposal of what your unique point of view is and your campaign idea. Make it memorable, and then follow up with an email with 24-48 hours after the conference.

3. What speakers and panelists would you like to forge relationships with, and how will you do it? This works the same way as it does with brands. Do your research on the speakers and see what you can offer them as far as your blog is concerned. This most likely is not exposure, but skills and talents that you possess that they may be in need of. Also, be sure to sign up for their email list, and share something of value that you learned for them either before or during the conference.

4. What collaborations would you like to start to work on with other attendees? There are so many different types of blogs out there, so start thinking of ways to collaborate with bloggers in your niche as well as those who are not. Working with other bloggers in your niche can grow your audience, and is sorta a no-brainer. But partnering with bloggers outside of your niche can expand your audience to those who may not have been readers before. Think of how their readers can benefit from your content, and how your readers can benefit from theirs.

5. What can I bring home to my readers? Don’t be selfish with all the goodies you gain from a large blogging conference. Definitely share your experience on social media by posting pictures and ‘tweet-worthy’ tidbits that you learned during the conference. Think of how you can use what you’ve learned to improve your blog for your readers. Also, find creative ways to share your conference experience that speak to your audience. Are you a style blogger? Write about what your wore to the conference. Are you a mommy blogger? Talk about how you got your kids prepared for you to be away form home to attend the conference. Are you a tech blogger? Share the tops apps that you used during the conference, or electronic devices that you had on deck. Are you a health and fitness blogger? Do a video of some hotel workout routines, or a ‘What I Ate During Blogalicious’ style video. Even something as simple as a vlog or recap video about your experience is fun to share with your audience. Here’s one I put together while attending Blogging While Brown last year, and I definitely plan to share one after attending Blogalicious this year!

If you can take some times to answer these 5 questions, you’ll be well on your way to creating a kick-butt plan for attending a large blogging conference. Attending my first Be Blogalious conference was truly a blessing and enjoyable experience all around. I was able to attend and volunteer, and my introverted self was pushed to the limits by all the engagement and interactions. Fortunately I was prepared for the conference weekend, and got everything I went for and more. Assisting with registration, monitoring time for speakers, listening to speakers, participating in master classes and brand board meetings, catching up with blogger boos and making new ones – so much to share!

As much as I would love to do an amazing and thorough recap for those of you that couldn’t attend, I just can’t. But here’s what I can do. I can share with you the 7 tweet-worthy quotes that I heard during Blogalicious. These really had an impact on me, and I shared these on my Twitter feed during the conference.

1. Do what you can’t not do. Tara Frank, Vice President of Multicultural Strategy for Hallmark Mahogany Cards, event sponsors, shared this quote. So many people are trying to figure out their purpose, their passion, and what exactly they should be focusing on. This I think sums it up.

2. Don’t get discouraged about others doing the same thing. You are still you and have your unique voice. Natasha from The YBF talked about her experience starting one of the most popular celebrity news sites focused on celebrities of color. She noticed people coming along after her, doing, or at least trying to do, what she was doing. It discouraged her, but then she remember that she was still getting MILLIONS of page views – clearly she was doing something right.

3. Don’t send proposals that are not well thought out, not strategic, and show no clear benefit for the brand. I’ve heard this said a million times in different ways, but I don’t think people are really taking this admonition seriously. This came directly from the mouths of the representatives at Wells Fargo, so if that’s not enough to move you to seriously get your pitch game up, I don’t know what will. [pullquote width=”300″ float=”left”]Bonus tweet worthy quote from LaShawne Holland: You can’t invest your money in the marketplace if you’re investing it at the mall. [/pullquote]

4. Own your expertise. If you’re passionate and willing to mentor others, you can be an expert in your niche. Just own it. Julie Ross-Godar, Executive Editoral Director at SheKnows, tap danced all over my toes with this one. I love mentoring others, especially new or small bloggers who are amazing but need that extra push to really get consistent and get things done. I’ve done it, and I’m passionate about sharing what I know – so that makes me an…expert. Yes, it’s hard for me to say, but I need to own it. I mean, when Nicole Walters tells you to own it and do it or she’s gonna kick your butt – you pretty much just have to.

5. Humanize and legitimize, before you monetize. Regina Anaejiou’s session was my main focus for the entire conference, and she snatched my edges and laid them down. Regina is the founder of ByRegina.com and has successfully created books and courses for anyone who want to establish and grow profitable presences online. This point I think is so key for anyone who wants to monetize their expertise. It’s the whole ‘people don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care’ concept. People need to get to know you, and that you want to share. And then they need to know that you actually are knowledgable about what it is you are going to share. After that trust is built, then you can offer paid options to tap into your brain on a higher level.

6. Serving people authentically is about matching them with the right product, not just any product. This is another gem from Regina. It’s totally okay that everyone doesn’t buy everything that you have to offer. In fact, you don’t want them to. Use your free content to qualify them for the higher level content at cost. That way people don’t feel like they got hoodwinked and bamboozled.

7. When the why is big enough, the how is easy. LaShawne Holland is a Wealth Activator, Wealth Coach, Money Expert and Non-Profit Strategist. She shared her ‘why’ – her desire to not let her environment growing up dictate her life course it was drove her to be successful in business. Now, she’s able to instill wealth building principles in her children and those who she works with. By any means necessary.

Last week we received an invitation from Natalie Zfat to experience the #FallforMassageNow event courtesy of Massage Now. It was scheduled for 7pm and my masseuse was ready for me as soon as I arrived. I changed into my robe and stored my personal items in a secure locker. The host greeted me outside of the changing room as soon as I was done and walked me to my massage room. My masseuse was waiting right outside for me.

She told me what to expect which I really appreciated; I’ve had massages where there was absolutely ZERO communication between the masseuse and I. (Awkward much?) She stepped out for me to disrobe and lie down comfortably. When she returned (after asking first) I heard her pump a few squirts of something in her hand. I’m assuming it was oil because she then quickly said “Monét, which oil would you like?” She told me what my 3 options were and allowed me to choose. I REALLY appreciated that because she could have simply used what was already in her hands. But, she didn’t. She allowed me to enjoy my experience from start to finish and that’s exactly what I did. She then asked what kind of pressure I wanted and kept me in the loop the entire time.

Fall & winter evening cocktail parties, brunch and homemade gifts are on everyone’s list when it comes to entertaining. Social media is taking center stage as one of the newest ways to plan and execute a home soiree. Event hashtags along with elaborate party photo shoots and creative party details appearing on Pinterest are trending this year. We here at Naturally Glam plan to bring you more entertaining and party planning posts, because we love a good get-together.

Many party experts say people are anxious for gatherings to be less expensive with a more casual cocktail party approach, rather than a sit-down dinner, because it allows guests to mingle more freely. Planners say food can be simple and decorations don’t have to be fancy,

Another idea when hosting a get together is to make some unique and simple DIY infusions before the party begins in order to create personalized and fun cocktails. Infusions, or the process of soaking any combination of botanical ingredients in spirits, are a simple way to make all-natural flavored liqueurs not available in stores. During out recent visit to Tupelo Honey Cafe, we tried a cocktail made with lavender infused vodka that was delicious. There’s no end to the creative possibilities. Herbs, spices and fruits are most commonly used for infusions. It’s a great way to make your party different instead of serving the same old cocktails and, you can send guests home with these infusions packaged in a cute apothecary bottle or mason jar. 

You can also dress up your drinks with unique garnishes, such as fresh cranberries skewered on toothpicks or cinnamon sticks. For the table, use brown craft paper that you can write on and indicate where your guests can go for the different flavor infusions and draw a line connecting the best food pairings for each flavor.

Most Sundays, it’s just Mr. Blakes and I – and NuNu – curled up on the couch watching football. This is our day to wind down and relax, and neither of us wants to do a ton of cooking. Founded by renowned Curly Hair Artist, Robin Sjoblom, Southern Curl Inc. cohosts the event with Innersense Organic Beauty and NaturallyCurly.com benefitting Devri Velazquez, who suffers from Takayasu Vasculitis, a rare, chronic autoimmune disease. For Atlanta-area women of curls, “Rock Your Blessing” offers a unique opportunity to be cut and styled by a handful of the most curl-qualified artists on the continent.

A few months back, Diana from Sisters With Beauty put out a call for sponsors so that she could be a vendor at the Black Love Experience event in Washington, DC. I had not previously heard of the event, though it has been happening for a couple of years now. I wasn’t planning to attend, but I definitely wanted to support my Butterfly Bae, so I headed over to her designated link to drop my coins. Instead of just covering 1 sponsorship slot, I wanted to be generous and cover 2 spots. Little did I know that I really had purchased 2 tickets to the event as a sponsor. Just like that, Mr. Blakes and I were going to Black Love Experience.

When we arrived, we were a bit overwhelmed by the amount of people, sounds, and sights. At one point, it was so congested that we literally were stuck. So we stayed stuck for about 10 minutes until the crowd started to settle and we could move around. We listened to some performances, and then headed to Intellectucool, which is an experience in and of itself. The goal is to create environments were strangers can connect on a deeper level than just your typical ice breaker. I sat and watched while Mr. Blakes participated in the Back to Back ice breaker activity. He ended up being paired with a gentleman who actually was a panelist we discovered later that evening and they had a great conversation.

Next up, we finally found Diana in the vendor area! She was connecting with folks on her book Butterfly Transition, and selling her Single Free & Black tees to the people. I also got to meet the owner of Ankara Streets who I’ve been stalking on IG forever because her clothing is so dope. Mr. Blakes purchased a ‘Giants Built The Pyramids’ graphic tee from. We also got to watch a dope artist doing a live painting at the event. Then we decided to take a break for the action and listen in on the Creative Resistance panel discussion. This panel really got our juices flowing as they discussed how creatives can play a role in The Resistance and make moves in this time we are in right now.

We decided to book a hotel ahead of time for that night so we would be able to sleep in before driving back home. Since our stay would be brief, my goal was to find a hotel that would be clean and comfortable, no more than 20-30 minutes from the event, and under $100 for the night. After a search on Expedia, I settled on the Hampton Inn & Suites in Falls Church, VA.

This hotel had a lot of the amenities I look for in a hotel, especially in the DMV area – free wifi, free breakfast, and free parking. You’d be surprised how many hotels even outside of the DC area do not offer free parking. And many hotels still do not offer complimentary wifi outside of the lobby area, which is a huge no-no for a blogger like myself. It also has a fitness center and indoor pool, so no matter the weather, you can enjoy both during your stay. Complimentary coffee and tea were in the lobby area at all times as well.

Check in and check out were a breeze, and the staff we encountered during our brief stay were friendly and helpful. The room was clean and more spacious than I thought. Although we did not have a suite, our One King Bed room did have a living area complete with a love-seat sized sofa, and two desk areas with additional chairs for plenty of seating. The room included an iron and ironing board, large flat screen tv, coffeemaker, microwave, and refrigerator. There were several lamps throughout the room, and several electrical outlets and even usb ports for charging electronic devices. The bathroom was nice sized as well, with a larger counter, single sink, and a large shower. I honestly don’t take baths at hotels, so I prefer a large shower over a shower/tub combo. The bed was very comfortable, and I got a great night of rest.

I find that I travel to DC quite often for events of all kinds, and it is always a bummer trying to drive up and back the same day. This hotel will definitely be on my short list of places to stay if I want to stay overnight again.

While womens networking brunches seem to be the new wave, there are some who have set the standard of what an empowerment brunch should look like. The Power Brunch VA is that standard in Hampton Roads. This event has been exclusive, for the past three years, but event founder Terria Hills decided to open it up to all for it’s fourth year.

For the afternoon, the Roma Lodge was transformed into an elegant space that buzzed with laughter, applause, and YASSSSs from attendees. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, or just have an entrepreneurial spirit, this event is was made with you in mind. It was about sisterhood, community, and positive vibes.

Terria, along with co-host Orna Hunter, welcomed hundreds of women into this sold out safe place where they learned to nurture their relationships, their businesses, and themselves. As guests arrived, they were able to walk the red carpet for photos, and enjoy a variety of vendors.

VIP ticket holders received reserved seating as well as a very heafty swag bag filled with goodies from sponsors like EDEN Body Works and Statefarm. The brunch menu was catered by private chefs and owners of Now You’re Cooking, Debra Brabson & Dedra Blount, and included a beautiful pastry table by Dulce Moments.

There were a variety of professionals who took the stage to share their stories, struggles, and triumphs, and even took questions from the audience. We were sang to (yes, SANG is a word) by She Sangs, who reminded us to live life like its golden. There were also giveaways. Tons, and tons, and tons of giveaways.


Guest speakers included makeup artist Sarah of The Makeup School by Sarah Rillon. Sarah has a long track record of success in the makeup industry, and she shared her struggles with her healthy right as she reached the peak of her makeup career. She also shared her why for creating her own makeup school for up and coming makeup artists. Keshia Brown is a nurse practitioner, and took the time to remind attendees that their body is a temple. She shared the importance of loving our bodies, protecting our bodies, and taking time for self-care.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Vanessa Jenkins Hightower, an international known and respected coach, trainer and motivational speaker. Dr. Jenkins Hightower is the Director of Norfolk State University Counseling Center, and the founder of Sentencing Options LLC and Progressive Leadership Management. Dr. Jenkins Hightower spoke about discovering your purpose, and determining your why. You could hear a pin drop, because she really captivated the audience and dropped some gems on everyone there.

There is no way you could’ve left this event not feeling like you could conquer the world – or at least your world. Spring and Summer have truly been the season for women’s networking and empowerment brunches. During my event planning hiatus, I’ve had the opportunity (and TIME) to attend some great events. One brunch series that I’ve enjoyed attending is the EmpoweringHer Brunch, hosted by Keisha Reynolds of K&R Communications. Previous brunches were focused on topics like branding and finances, but the latest in the event series was focused on self care.

Held at the Courtyard Marriott in Norfolk, VA, the space was turned into an intimate setting with gorgeous decor that featured positive affirmations and ‘boss chick’ reminders. This event wasn’t just for entrepreneurs and business owners. It was for all women, because we often times put the needs of others above our own to a fault. Whether you’re a stay-at-home mom, or a corporate executive, there was something to take away from the event.

As guests arrived, they were able to get their picture taken by the event photographer, or grab selfies in front of the step and repeat. There were a few vendors present as well for a little shopping during the event. The menu featured a selection of breakfast casseroles, fresh fruit, and pastries, as well as mimosa/sangria stations. All attendees received a lovely gift bag with some goodies like bath salts and skin care samples to take home.

The agenda included a panel of women to speak on topics ranging from hair care, skin care, holistic health, and spiritual wellness. Guest speakers included Johnene of The Texture Mix, a subscription box service for women with natural hair. Johnene share her natural hair journey, what drove her to start her business, and some simple hair care tips. Next we heard from Ebonie Robinson, a Mary Kay consultant, who shared her journey to better skin care and tips on how to create a better skin care routine.

Author/speaker Nina Brewton spoke on the topic of how her plant-based diet was a catalyst to a more holistic way of life, and simple ways to add holistic wellness into our lifestyle. Patty B, essential oils specialist, shared how using aromatherapy has changed her life and why she can’t keep it to herself. Lastly, Lisa Martin had us focus on how our mental and spiritual health can manifest itself in a negative or positive way in our physical health. She shared how we can use meditation to improve our overall health.

There is no way you could’ve left this event not feeling like you could conquer the world – or at least your world. I’m not wine expert, but I do enjoy trying  new wines and cuisines, and learning more about both. When my friend Stacey invited me to join her and a group of ladies at the Wine and Cuisine Pairing event at Pasha Mezze, I was all in. Totally forgot that I had registered for a brunch event earlier in the day in Hampton, which is about 35 minutes away.

No worries because the lovely folks at Toyota allowed me to test drive the 2018 Toyota Avalon for the week, so I was open for all the road trips. First thing first, the car is beautiful, inside and out. The exterior is sophisticated and sporty at the same time, and the navy blue Parisian Night Pearl color is gorgeous. The Eco drive mode uses less gas – I barely used a quarter tank of gas all week and never felt a difference in performance. I love the blind spot and traffic alert safety system Toyota has to offer. You just can’t see everything, and illuminating warning signal on the side view mirror are the extra eyes you need.

After enjoying the brunch event, I headed over to Norfolk for the wine pairing event at Pasha Mezze. What I really enjoyed was that each wine and course was explained thoroughly. The details about the wine selection was shared, and then the chef would talk about the food. You could feel the love in everything they presented, and it showed in the food. There was not a thing that I didn’t finish – it was all delicious. I even liked all of the wines, which surprised me!

This group of ladies are amazing and we had such great conversations. There’s nothing like women from all walks of life coming together over great food and wine, and just having fun. No cattiness, and no gossiping. My kind of girls night.

I almost hated getting back to work after a fabulous weekend, but I was up early for work on Monday long before the sun. Fortunately the Avalon has plenty of interior and exterior lighting – as soon as you approach the car with you key, the driver door unlocks and the exterior lights up.

The 2018 Toyota Avalon is a versatile car. Whether you’re a solo driver, or have a family of 4, there’s plenty of space in the Avalon. Remember when I attended the Power Brunch VA last year? It was amazing, so I was excited to be invited back again this year as the official blogger for the 5th annual women’s networking event. The Power Brunch VA brings together 300 women from all walks of life in Hampton Roads and from afar. Event founder Terria Hills is a local makeup artist and real estate agent. This year’s event had a ‘shades of pink’ theme for breast cancer awareness.

Attendees arrived at the Roma Lodge dressed in all shades of pink looking amazing, and had the chance to take advantage of the decked out Photo Booth and a wide variety of vendors. Brittany Sump, a local artist, created an amazing painting during the event that would later be given away as a prize.

VIP ticket holders received reserved seating as well as a very heafty swag bag filled with goodies from several local businesses. The brunch menu was catered by Alicia Keene, and the dessert bar was done by Dulce Momentz again this year.

As with last year’s brunch, there were several guest speakers and performances to keep attendees entertained. We started the afternoon with a drag performance, and also enjoyed performances from She Sangs and TRK Band. There were also a ton of amazing giveaways.

Guest speakers included Dr. Shaughanassee Williams, founder of HealthyHER Center for Women. She shared some statistics about breast cancer in Hampton Roads that were staggering. She also shared tips on how to improve our overall health, breast cancer prevention, and the importance of regular check ups and testing. Ebony Porter-Ike of the epiMediaGroup, a global PR firm, talked about branding and marketing. She talked about the importance of your personal brand, and even took some questions from the audience about growing your business and what key people does everyone need on their team.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Vanessa Jenkins Hightower, the founder of Sentencing Options LLC and Progressive Leadership Management. Last year, Dr. Jenkins Hightower spoke about discovering your purpose, and determining your why. This year, she talked about how to act in your purpose and bring your vision into fruition.

It was very sad to see this event come to an end, because this was going to be the fifth and FINAL Power Brunch VA. But because of the positive feedback and requests to keep it going, Terria has decided to take a break and bring the brunch back in 2020.
